Joel Tenebaum was fined US$675,000 for illegal music downloads. Now he is asking the judge to reduce the fine or allow him a retrial.

What has Joel done to get such a huge fine?

Joel is a 25-year old graduate student at Boston University pursuing a physics PhD. He says he loves music.

He reportedly downloaded hundreds of songs online since 1999 but the court case focused on 30 tracks that he admitted downloading. He was fined $22,500 per song.

30songs x $22,500 = $675,000

Now Joel is saying that the costs awarded against him are "grossly excessive".

He is working with a small team of passionate students under the guidance of Professor Charles Nesson, a prominent Internet Lawyer.

It’s about defending the average Davids against the corporate Goliath. Because Joel Tenenbaum is just like us too.

Joel is updating his case through Twitter and Facebook group.

US$1.9 million for 24 songs

The case is only the second of its kind to go to trial in the US. In the first case, a woman in Minneapolis was ordered to pay $1.92m for sharing 24 songs
